Kiren Rijiju Urges All States to Establish Family Courts in Every District

Union Minister for Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju, has urged all states to establish family courts in every district with a population exceeding 10 lakh. He highlighted that family court matters are sensitive and require careful handling. Rijiju shared this information with the Parliament on Tuesday, stressing the need for dedicated family courts in every district to ensure proper care for such cases.

The statement came during the Lok Sabha’s debate on the Family Courts Amendment Bill, which had already been passed by the Lower House. Rijiju defended the bill by providing current statistics on family courts and pending cases.

As per Rijiju’s report to the Lok Sabha, there are currently 715 family courts in India with 11,49,907 cases pending as of April 31. India has a total of 773 districts, and by May, 69,464 new cases had been registered.

The Law Minister also mentioned that he would review the situation later this week during a Conference of all District Judges, scheduled for July 30. The conference will include the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister, and district judges from across the country. This meeting will focus on critical issues related to family courts.

Rijiju stated, “We recently held a conference with chief justices of all high courts and senior judges of the Supreme Court to discuss significant matters. This upcoming conference will also address issues concerning family courts.”

He emphasized the need for a slow, careful, and sensitive resolution of family court cases, highlighting the government’s efforts to improve the process. Rijiju noted the potential of using technology and mediation to speed up case resolutions. “Most family and commercial cases can be resolved through mediation. We are also introducing a Mediation Bill. District legal aid counselling will be free through the National Legal Services Authority,” he said.
