Kiren Rijiju Urges All States to Set Up Family Courts in Every District

Kiren Rijiju Asks States to Establish Family Courts in Every District with Over 10 Lakh Population

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has written to all Indian states, requesting them to set up family courts in every district with a population of more than 10 lakh. He stressed that family-related legal matters are sensitive and must be handled with care and attention.

Rijiju made this statement during a Lok Sabha discussion on the Family Courts Amendment Bill, which has already been passed in the Lower House.

Pending Family Cases a Major Concern

While defending the Bill, Rijiju shared important statistics. Currently, India has 715 family courts, and as of April 31, there are over 11.49 lakh pending cases. Out of 773 total districts, only a limited number have fully functioning family courts. As of May, 69,464 new family cases had been registered.

Rijiju also mentioned that he would review this matter during the District Judges Conference scheduled for July 30, which will also be attended by the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India.

Family Disputes Need Careful Handling

“Cases in family courts need to be resolved slowly, carefully, and with sensitivity,” Rijiju said. He emphasized the importance of technology and mediation in speeding up the process.

Mediation and Legal Aid for Faster Justice

Rijiju added that most family and commercial disputes can be settled through mediation. He announced that the government is introducing a Mediation Bill to support this process. Also, free legal aid counselling will be available through the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

“We recently held a conference with the Chief Justices of all High Courts and senior Supreme Court judges. Family court matters will also be a part of future discussions,” Rijiju added.
