A woman from Kerala has retracted her dowry abuse accusations against her husband, nearly a month after publicly accusing him and his family of assaulting her over dowry demands. The 26-year-old, known as Neha (name changed), initially filed a complaint on May 12, just a week after her wedding, alleging that her husband, Rahul P Gopal, and his family subjected her to brutal torture for dowry. However, in a recent video, Neha stated that she was forced by her family and lawyer to make those allegations.
Initial Allegations
Neha initially accused her husband of physically abusing her, describing severe incidents of assault where she was beaten, strangled with a phone charger cable, and attacked with a belt. Following these claims, the Pantheerankavu police launched an investigation led by Feroke ACP Saju K Abraham. The allegations attracted significant attention, with Neha detailing her experiences to media outlets.
Dowry Abuse Claims Retracted
In a surprising turn of events, Neha appeared in an 18-minute video posted on YouTube, retracting her previous statements. She acknowledged that while her husband did hit her twice, the accusations of dowry abuse were fabricated under pressure. Neha claimed her family and lawyer advised her to alter the story to strengthen her case. She expressed regret for making false allegations, stating, “Rahul and his family never asked for dowry.”
Family’s Response and Missing Complaint
Neha’s family, however, denies her latest claims, expressing concern about the authenticity of the video. Her brother told a news channel that Neha had been missing from her workplace in Thiruvananthapuram since June 3. The family became aware of her disappearance a week later, on June 10, when they realized she hadn’t been in touch and her phone was switched off. Neha’s brother added that while her office had approved a leave request from June 3 to June 21, Neha had told her manager that she was going on a trip with her family, which her relatives claim is untrue.
Police Investigation
The family has now filed a missing person complaint with the Paravoor police in Ernakulam. Neha’s brother confirmed that the police are investigating her disappearance alongside the domestic abuse case. He also clarified that doctors from both a government hospital and a private hospital had confirmed that Neha was physically assaulted, backing up her original allegations.
Neha’s Final Statement
In response to speculations that she was coerced into withdrawing her allegations, Neha appeared in a second video, doubling down on her new claims. She stated that no one had pressured her to record the initial video and that she had chosen to distance herself from her family and the situation due to the stress she was facing.
The case continues to unfold as both Neha’s family and the police investigate her whereabouts, raising concerns about her safety and the circumstances surrounding her retraction of the dowry abuse claims.
