Kerala Woman Withdraws Dowry Abuse Allegations, Family Reports Her Missing
A woman from Ernakulam, Kerala, who had previously accused her husband and his family of dowry-related abuse, has now appeared in a video retracting her allegations. However, her family claims she has gone missing and has filed a complaint with the police.
Initial Allegations and Investigation
On May 12, just a week after her wedding, 26-year-old Neha (name changed) filed a complaint with the Pantheerankavu police, accusing her husband, Rahul P Gopal, of torturing her for dowry. She also alleged that the police had been negligent in handling her case, prompting a special investigation team led by Feroke ACP Saju K Abraham to take charge.
On May 14, she gave a detailed interview to the media, describing how her husband physically assaulted her, attempted to strangle her with a phone charger cable, and brutally beat her.
Neha’s Video Retraction
In an 18-minute video posted online, Neha denied her earlier claims, stating that while her husband did hit her, it happened only twice and was due to a misunderstanding. She alleged that she was pressured by her family and lawyer to exaggerate her statements and falsely claim it was dowry-related violence.
She stated, “Rahul and his family never demanded dowry. I regret making false allegations.”
Family’s Response and Missing Complaint
Neha’s family, however, has denied her new claims. Her brother stated they were unsure whether she recorded the video willingly or was forced.
Adding to the concerns, her family reported her missing on June 10. According to her brother:
- They last saw her on June 3, when she was dropped off at Ernakulam railway station for work in Thiruvananthapuram.
- She had taken leave from work from June 3 to June 21, claiming she was going on a family trip.
- She stopped contacting her mother and her phone was switched off on June 9.
Her family has now lodged a missing person complaint with Paravoor police in Ernakulam. The investigation team handling the domestic abuse case has also been informed.
Doctor’s Statement Confirms Assault
Neha’s brother emphasized that the police registered the case based on medical evidence. Two different doctors confirmed that Neha had been physically assaulted, one from Feroke Taluk Hospital and another from a private hospital where Rahul had taken her that night.
Neha’s Second Video Statement
As speculation grew that she had been forced to withdraw her allegations, Neha released a second video, asserting that she was not under pressure and had made the first video voluntarily.
She explained, “I needed to stay away from everyone for a while. My situation at home wouldn’t have allowed me to speak the truth.” She also alleged that her family had threatened her life.
Ongoing Investigation
The police are currently investigating both the dowry abuse case and her disappearance. Authorities are also trying to verify whether she was pressured into withdrawing her allegations.
