Kerala Woman Retracts Dowry Abuse Allegations Against Husband, Family Files Missing Complaint

A month after accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, a 26-year-old woman from Ernakulam, Kerala, has released a video retracting her earlier statements. She now claims she was pressured by her family and lawyer to file a false complaint. Meanwhile, her family alleges she has gone missing.

Case Background

On May 12, just a week after her marriage to Rahul P Gopal, the woman, identified as Neha (name changed), filed a complaint with Pantheerankavu police. She accused her husband of brutally assaulting her over dowry demands. Following her statement, a special investigation team led by Feroke ACP Saju K Abraham took charge of the case.

Two days later, Neha described to the media how her husband allegedly beat and strangled her, claiming she narrowly escaped.

Retraction Video

In a recent 18-minute YouTube video, Neha retracted her dowry allegations, admitting that Rahul had hit her “only twice” due to misunderstandings. She alleged that her lawyer and family forced her to accuse Rahul of dowry abuse. Neha added that she now regrets making “false allegations.”

Her family, however, denied her claims, saying they were unsure if the video was recorded voluntarily. They also reported that she had been missing since June 3. According to her workplace in Thiruvananthapuram, Neha had applied for leave until June 21, citing a family trip, but her family insists they were unaware of this.

Missing Complaint

Neha’s family has lodged a missing complaint with Paravoor police. They also informed the domestic abuse investigation team. Her brother highlighted that medical reports from both a government hospital and a private hospital confirmed she had been physically assaulted.

Second Video Statement

Amid speculation of coercion, Neha later released another video stating she was safe, was not forced to record the first video, and had chosen to step away due to family pressure. She also alleged that her family had threatened her.
