Journalist Abused and Stripped at MP Police Station, Investigation Ordered
On April 2, in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, local journalist and YouTuber Kanishk Tiwari was detained and abused by police. Tiwari was covering the arrest of theatre artist Neeraj Kunder, who was accused of making indecent remarks about BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla and his son using a fake ID.
Tiwari stated, “We went to the Kotwali police station to inquire about Kunder’s arrest. Instead, we were detained, beaten, abused, and forced to strip.”
Neeraj Kunder, director of Indravati Natya Samiti, has been working to preserve the art of Vindhyas. He allegedly created a fake Facebook ID under the name Anurag Mishra. Upon his arrest, many people, including Kunder’s parents and Tiwari, went to the police station.
Another theatre artist, Narendra Bahadur Singh, who supported Kunder, claimed they were also beaten and stripped.
Mukesh Kumar Shrivastava, Superintendent of Police in Sidhi district, claimed that those arrested were not journalists but miscreants. When questioned about the viral photo showing Tiwari and others half-naked, Shrivastava said, “It’s a normal procedure to ensure no one attempts anything harmful, like suicide. The photo has come to my attention, and I have ordered an investigation. Legal action will be taken against those responsible for taking and distributing the photo.”
Tiwari alleged that his assault and humiliation were due to his previous coverage against local politicians and police in the district.
