On April 2, a disturbing incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district, where local journalist and YouTuber Kanishk Tiwari was detained and allegedly mistreated at the Kotwali police station. Tiwari had gone to cover the arrest of theatre artist Neeraj Kunder, who was taken into custody for allegedly posting defamatory content about BJP MLA Kedarnath Shukla and his son using a fake social media account.
Tiwari recounted that he and others were detained for nearly 18 hours, during which they were beaten, verbally abused, and forced to strip.
Neeraj Kunder, the director of the Indravati Natya Samiti, has been actively preserving the traditional art forms of the Vindhya region. Authorities claim he created a fake Facebook profile under the name “Anurag Mishra.” Following his arrest, his parents, Tiwari, and other supporters, including fellow theatre artist Narendra Bahadur Singh, visited the police station.
Singh alleged that everyone who came to support Kunder faced physical abuse and humiliation.
However, Sidhi Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Shrivastava denied the involvement of journalists, labeling those arrested as miscreants. Addressing a viral photo showing detainees half-naked, Shrivastava stated it was a routine measure to prevent self-harm. He assured the public that an inquiry had been ordered to identify who took and shared the image, promising strict legal action against the culprits.
Tiwari claims the police targeted him due to his critical reporting on local politicians and law enforcement.
