Jadavpur University Student Dies After 2 Hours of Ragging in Hostel
A tragic incident at Jadavpur University has raised concerns about student safety. Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year student, faced intense ragging for nearly two hours before he fell from a second-floor balcony of the university’s main hostel. The incident took place outside the campus and resulted in his untimely death.
Shocking Details of the Ragging Incident
According to police reports, Swapnadip was subjected to verbal abuse, obscene comments, and inappropriate gestures from senior students. The ragging took place between 8 PM and 10 PM on Wednesday. He was trapped inside a hostel room with multiple individuals, including Sourav Chowdhury, a former postgraduate mathematics student.
Evidence suggests that the ragging caused severe mental distress. After the harassment, a so-called “counseling” session was held, where Sourav was also present. However, Sourav’s statements to the police were inconsistent, raising suspicions about his role in the incident.
Investigation and Legal Action
Authorities are investigating whether Sourav took away Swapnadip’s phone, possibly preventing him from reaching out for help. The police opposed Sourav’s bail, arguing that he could intimidate witnesses or destroy evidence. They emphasized that his custody was essential to uncover the truth and identify others involved.
On August 22, the Alipore court extended Sourav’s custody to allow further investigation. His lawyer, however, claimed he was being framed and that he had only helped Swapnadip secure a hostel room. As he was taken from the court lock-up, Sourav insisted he was innocent.
Raising Awareness on the Dangers of Ragging
This heartbreaking incident highlights the severe consequences of ragging in educational institutions. It underscores the urgent need for stricter anti-ragging measures to protect students from harassment and mental trauma. Universities must enforce strict policies to ensure student safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
