Jadavpur University Fresher Dies After 2-Hour Ragging in Hostel Room
A heartbreaking incident at Jadavpur University has brought the dark side of ragging back into the spotlight. Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year student, died after reportedly enduring two hours of intense ragging in the university’s main hostel located outside the campus.
According to police, the incident took place on a Wednesday evening between 8 pm and 10 pm. Swapnadip was allegedly locked inside a room with several students, including Sourav Chowdhury, a former postgraduate mathematics student. During this time, he was subjected to abusive language, obscene comments, and inappropriate gestures.
The harassment reportedly caused severe mental trauma to the young student. After the ragging session, a supposed “counselling session” took place, with Sourav also present. Soon after, Swapnadip tragically fell from the second-floor balcony, leading to his death.
Police found inconsistencies in Sourav’s statements, which raised suspicions about his involvement. Authorities are investigating whether Sourav confiscated Swapnadip’s mobile phone, possibly preventing him from contacting his family.
In court, police strongly opposed Sourav’s bail, fearing he might threaten witnesses or tamper with evidence. They emphasized the need for his custody to piece together the full sequence of events and uncover other individuals involved. The Alipore court has granted police custody of Sourav until August 22.
Sourav’s lawyer argued that he was being framed and claimed that he actually helped Swapnadip get a hostel room. As he left the court lock-up, Sourav declared his innocence.
This tragic event highlights the serious dangers of ragging in educational institutions and stresses the urgent need for strict anti-ragging measures and awareness across campuses.
