Interpol Issues Blue Corner Notice for UK-Based Man in Dowry Case
Ahmedabad: The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a blue corner notice for Ronak Pandya, a 43-year-old man who fled to the United Kingdom in 2005 to escape trial in a domestic violence and dowry case filed by his wife, Rutva Pandya.
This notice, issued on June 18, 2022, helps collect additional information about Pandya’s identity, location, and activities in relation to the case. The Gujarat High Court was informed about this development by the state government on Thursday.
Legal Battle Against Ronak Pandya
Rutva had approached the Gujarat High Court in 2015, seeking directions to bring her husband back to stand trial and pay her maintenance. After legal proceedings, he was declared an absconder, and his parents were convicted in 2009 under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with cruelty against women.
The CID (Crime) discovered that Pandya had fled to the UK using a fraudulent passport. Despite Rutva’s repeated efforts, Indian authorities hesitated to issue a red corner notice in matrimonial cases. However, Justice Sonia Gokani questioned if there was any legal restriction preventing such action in domestic violence cases.
The Disappearance and International Search
Ronak and Rutva got married in 2004 but decided to separate within a year. They filed for divorce on September 13, 2005, in a family court in Ahmedabad. However, Pandya never showed up in court. When Rutva inquired, her mother-in-law revealed that he had already left for London.
Determined to find him, Rutva approached the Indian and UK High Commissions and even passport authorities, but Ronak remained untraceable.
With the Interpol blue corner notice now in place, authorities hope to locate Pandya in the UK and bring him back for trial.
