Interpol Issues Blue Corner Notice for UK-Based Man in 16-Year-Old Ahmedabad Case
In June 2022, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) issued a blue corner notice for 43-year-old Ronak Pandya. This notice aims to gather more information about his identity, location, or activities related to a 16-year-old criminal case. The case, filed by his wife Rutva, involves domestic violence and dowry demands. Pandya fled to the United Kingdom in 2005.
The Gujarat state government informed the Gujarat High Court on Thursday about the blue corner notice, which was issued on June 18 following a notification from an inspector general about the ongoing criminal case against Pandya.
A copy of the notice was provided to Rutva’s lawyer, Samirkhan Pathan, who then withdrew her 2015 petition. This petition had sought directions to bring back her husband to face trial and to secure maintenance payments.
Rutva approached the high court, leading to Pandya being declared an absconder. His parents were convicted in 2009 under section 498A of the IPC after they stood trial.
The CID (Crime Investigation Department) discovered that Pandya had left India for the UK using a fraudulently obtained passport. Justice Sonia Gokani questioned whether a red corner notice could be issued in matrimonial cases, highlighting a reluctance by the Centre to issue such notices for domestic violence cases.
Rutva and Ronak married in 2004 but decided to separate a year later. They filed for divorce with mutual consent on September 13, 2005, in a family court in the city. That was the last time Rutva saw her husband, who failed to appear in court thereafter. Upon inquiry, her mother-in-law revealed that Pandya had moved to London. Rutva approached the high commissions of both India and the UK to locate him, but the passport authorities declared him untraceable.
