Interpol has issued a blue corner notice for 43-year-old Ronak Pandya, who fled to the United Kingdom in 2005 to avoid trial in a domestic violence and dowry case. The notice was issued in June 2022 after Gujarat authorities requested Interpol’s assistance in locating him. Pandya’s wife, Rutva, filed the case 16 years ago under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), accusing him of domestic violence and dowry demands.
The Gujarat state government informed the High Court about the issuance of the blue corner notice on June 18, following the intimation from an inspector general. This notice aims to gather information about Pandya’s identity, location, or activities in the UK.
Rutva’s lawyer, Samirkhan Pathan, received a copy of the notice and withdrew the petition filed in 2015 seeking her husband’s return and maintenance payments. Rutva had earlier managed to get Ronak declared an absconder by the court. His parents were convicted in 2009 for their involvement in the dowry case.
According to the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Ronak fled to the UK using a fraudulently obtained passport. While the central government had hesitated to issue a red corner notice in matrimonial cases, the Gujarat High Court questioned whether such notices could be barred in cases involving domestic violence.
Ronak and Rutva were married in 2004 and mutually filed for divorce in 2005. However, Ronak left for London before the court proceedings, and Rutva never saw him again. She reached out to high commissions in both countries to trace her husband, but he remained untraceable.
