IIT-Guwahati Professor Found Dead in Campus Quarters; Suicide Suspected

A 47-year-old assistant professor from the Mathematics department of IIT-Guwahati was found hanging in his campus quarters on Friday evening, in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide.

The body was discovered inside faculty quarter D 022 after staff reported a foul smell coming from the locked room. The Kamrup district police, led by Superintendent Hitesh Ch. Roy, responded to the alert and recovered the body.

“We believe the death occurred two to three days ago. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and we are continuing the investigation,” said Roy.

Police noted that initial evidence suggests suicide, but confirmed that they would wait for post-mortem results and conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the professor’s death.

The deceased, identified as Kamal Ansari, was the son of Ismatullah Ansari, a resident of Paschim Vihar, New Delhi.

In an official statement, IIT-Guwahati expressed deep sorrow over the incident:

“The institute is in touch with the professor’s family. We offer our heartfelt condolences and will fully support the police investigation. An internal inquiry will also be conducted to understand the matter better.”

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the campus community, raising concerns about mental health and support systems within academic institutions.
