Harjot Kaur Bamhrah, a senior IAS officer and chairperson-cum-MD of the Women and Child Development Corporation (WCDC), sparked controversy after mocking a schoolgirl who requested affordable sanitary napkins during an event. The incident took place at a workshop titled “Sashakt Beti, Samridh Bihar: Towards Enhancing the Value of Girls in Bihar” on September 27, organized by the WCDC in collaboration with international NGOs.
During the event, a schoolgirl asked, “Can’t the government provide us with affordable sanitary napkins that cost Rs 20-30 per pack?” In response, Bamhrah sarcastically replied, “Is there any end to such demands? Tomorrow you’ll ask for jeans, then shoes, and eventually condoms for family planning.”
The situation worsened when the girl, feeling humiliated, said she wouldn’t vote for the government in the next elections. Bamhrah retorted, “Don’t vote then! The government is yours. This is the height of stupidity!”
The remarks have drawn sharp criticism, with Bihar’s Social Welfare Minister, Madan Sahni, expressing his shock. He stated, “She was supposed to boost the morale of the girls, but instead, she discouraged them. This is not right. Such comments shouldn’t be made in public.”
Sahni further emphasized that the government had made significant progress in empowering women, including granting reservations in state panchayat bodies and government jobs. He added that he would discuss the matter with the department secretary.
