Dr. Sangeeta Dutta and her husband, Dr. Waliul Islam, well-known psychiatrists from Guwahati, have been detained by police on charges of assaulting their minor daughter. The couple, who live in Manipuri Basti, are prominent figures in their respective fields.
Child rights activist Miguel Das Queah, head of the child rights organization UTSAH, mentioned that while he had received multiple complaints previously, there was no concrete evidence to support the claims. However, the situation came to light on Friday when a neighbor approached the police with concerns.
The accusations against Dr. Dutta and Dr. Islam include brutally assaulting their daughter without regard for her well-being. It has been reported that they would often tie her up on the rooftop of their apartment complex as a form of punishment.
There is also some confusion about the child’s origins. The couple initially claimed they had adopted the child but later said she was their biological daughter, conceived through IVF. There is also suspicion that the child might have been adopted from Dr. Islam’s previous marriage.
A source indicated that the 5-year-old girl has visible bruise marks on her body. Miguel Das Queah praised the neighbor who reported the abuse, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable children.
Despite the serious allegations, Dr. Sangeeta Dutta has publicly denied the charges, calling them a conspiracy in a video statement.
