Renowned Guwahati psychiatrists Dr. Sangeeta Dutta and her husband, Dr. Waliul Islam, have been detained by the police over allegations of assaulting their minor daughter. The couple, both well-respected in their fields, reside in Manipuri Basti, Guwahati.
The case was brought to light by child rights activist Miguel Das Queah, head of the child rights organization UTSAH. Queah mentioned that while he had previously received multiple complaints regarding the couple, there was no solid evidence to take action at the time. However, on Friday, a concerned neighbor finally reported the matter to the authorities.
The couple is accused of repeatedly assaulting their young daughter and even tying her up on the rooftop of their apartment complex as a form of punishment. Reports suggest that the child, believed to be around 5 years old, bears multiple bruise marks across her body, raising serious concerns about her well-being.
Initially, the couple claimed the child was adopted, but later stated that she was their biological daughter, conceived through IVF. There is also speculation that the child may have been adopted from Dr. Islam’s previous marriage.
Queah praised the neighbor’s decision to involve the police, stating that the intervention has finally brought attention to the disturbing allegations. “The police are now investigating the case, and the neighbor’s action has been instrumental in addressing the situation,” Queah said.
However, in a video statement, Dr. Sangeeta Dutta denied all the allegations, dismissing them as part of a conspiracy against her and her husband.
The case remains under investigation as authorities look further into the matter.
