Senior Executive in Gurgaon Commits Suicide After Allegations of Harassment
A senior executive at a private company in Gurgaon, Amit Kumar, ended his life after being accused of sexual harassment. He left a four-page suicide note detailing his distress.
Amit Kumar, 41, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his home in Gurgaon’s Sector 9 on the morning of August 30. His wife has accused his colleagues and the company, Optum Global Solutions, of abetting his suicide. The couple has a 5-year-old son.
According to sources, a female colleague had accused Kumar of sexual harassment on Thursday. Unable to bear the humiliation, he took his own life.
In his suicide note, Kumar wrote, “I am sorry for my wife and son for leaving them alone. Today I was humiliated with sexual harassment allegations in the meeting. I never gave special treatment to any employee. I treated every employee equally… Whatever I am doing is due to allegations in the office. My family and relatives are not involved in this.”
Kumar had joined Optum Global Solutions, a company that provides digital healthcare services, just a month and a half ago. His cousin, Mohit, mentioned that the family was unaware of his stress and anxiety. Colleagues indicated that an issue had been ongoing at the office for the last 7-8 days, but Kumar had not mentioned anything at home.
On the morning of his death, Kumar’s wife received a call from a colleague informing her that Kumar had sent a message about his intention to commit suicide. She rushed upstairs and found him hanging from the fan.
The police have started an investigation, and handwriting experts are analyzing the suicide note. An FIR has been registered at the Sector 9A police station under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC, naming the company and the colleagues. The investigation is ongoing.
