Gurgaon Couple Arrested for Torturing 14-Year-Old Domestic Maid

A Gurgaon couple, Kamaljeet and Manish, were arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly torturing and sexually harassing a 14-year-old girl they had hired as a babysitter. The police rescued the minor from their New Colony home.

The couple was presented in a local court on Wednesday. Kamaljeet was placed in police remand for two days for questioning, while Manish was sent to judicial custody.

Both worked for prominent companies: Kamaljeet at Max Life Insurance and Manish at PR agency Media Mantra. They were terminated from their jobs on Wednesday following the incident.

The girl, originally from Ranchi, came to Gurgaon in mid-2022 with her maternal uncle. She was hired by the couple through a Delhi placement agency about five months ago. A joint effort by the police and Sakhi, a one-stop crisis center, led to her rescue on Tuesday.

She told police she had been confined to the house for five months, enduring severe abuse. She had multiple burn injuries on her hands, feet, and face, inflicted by hot kitchen tongs. She also reported being starved and forced to survive on scraps from the dustbin.

The couple monitored her through CCTV and beat her if she ate anything. They also prohibited her from speaking to anyone when she took their baby to the park, torturing her if she disobeyed. Kamaljeet even broke the girl’s teeth with a ladle. They used a belt, frying pan, and fork to beat her.

Currently, the girl is being treated at a government hospital. Doctors report that she has multiple burns and bruises but is in stable condition.

A security guard in New Colony recounted the police arrival: “They asked about the house and I directed them to the fourth floor. The girl opened the door with visible injuries.”

Pinky Malik, in charge of the Sakhi center, filed a police complaint, leading to an FIR and the couple’s arrest. They are charged under sections 323 (causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, as well as relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and Pocso Act.

Max Life Insurance and Media Mantra issued official statements on Twitter, condemning the actions and confirming the immediate termination of the employees involved.

Max Life Insurance stated, “We uphold high ethical and moral conduct at all times. We have severed the employment of the individual with immediate effect.”

Media Mantra added, “We are shocked to learn about the human rights and child abuse allegations against an employee. We respect the Indian legal system and are strictly against any form of human rights abuse. The company has terminated her services with immediate effect.”
