Gujarat Dentist Sentenced to Life for Poisoning Brother and Niece Over Property Dispute
On Monday, a court in Patan, Gujarat, sentenced 28-year-old dentist Kinnari Patel to life imprisonment for poisoning her 32-year-old brother, Jigar, and his 14-month-old daughter, Mahi. The crime was driven by animosity towards her sister-in-law and a desire to claim her father’s property worth crores.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Kinnari Patel and recommended compensation for the victim’s wife, Bhumi, under the state’s scheme.
The tragic events unfolded on May 5, 2019, when Kinnari offered her brother a drink laced with extracts from the toxic ‘dhatura’ seeds while they were traveling to their native village, Kalana. As Jigar fell ill, Kinnari forced a cyanide pill into his mouth. When Jigar attempted to retrieve his car key to seek medical help, Kinnari hid the key, leading to his death. She later disposed of the car key in Ahmedabad.
On May 25, Kinnari offered glucose water mixed with dhatura seed extracts to her sister-in-law, who subsequently fell ill and needed medical attention. During her absence, Kinnari took the opportunity to administer cyanide powder to her niece, Mahi, resulting in her death.
The Patels, originally from Siddhpur, Kalana, had ongoing property disputes. Suspicious of the unnatural deaths, the siblings’ industrialist father filed a complaint against Kinnari. Following the complaint, Jigar’s body was exhumed for a fresh post-mortem, which confirmed cyanide poisoning. Despite confessing to the police, Kinnari denied the charges in court. However, the court found her guilty based on circumstantial evidence.
Kinnari Patel’s lawyer announced plans to challenge the court’s decision in the Gujarat High Court.
