A few days ago, a 36-year-old woman from Ghaziabad reported that she had been gang-raped by five men. However, police now claim the woman fabricated the story to settle a property dispute.
Praveen Kumar, the regional police chief of Uttar Pradesh, stated on Thursday, “She was with two of her friends for the two days during which she claimed she was kidnapped and raped by five men.”
The case attracted attention when the woman, a resident of Delhi, was admitted to GTB Hospital. Swati Maliwal, chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, tweeted about the woman’s condition, stating that she had been found tied up in a jute bag with an iron rod inserted in her private parts.
Following the complaint, police arrested four of the five men and opened a case. However, they also pointed out the ongoing property dispute between the woman and the accused.
Initially, the woman was taken to a government hospital in Ghaziabad and later advised to go to Meerut for medical examination, but she refused at both locations. At her request, she was admitted to GTB Hospital in Delhi. Doctors there, however, found no internal injuries.
The police also traced the mobile phone signals and found that one of her friends had turned off his phone at the same spot where she was later found, near Ashram Road, which connects Ghaziabad to Delhi. The woman had claimed she was kidnapped while waiting for a bus after attending a birthday party in Ghaziabad. According to her, five men in a car dragged her inside and assaulted her.
The police now believe the complaint was a conspiracy to frame the men in a false rape case. Evidence has emerged that one of the men involved paid someone through PayTM to generate publicity around the false claim. This friend already has three criminal cases against him.
Neither the woman nor Swati Maliwal has responded publicly to the police’s claim that the case was fabricated.
