The ragging occurred in a hostel room of Jadavpur University Main Hostel, located outside the campus. The police report that the severe mental distress caused by this prolonged ragging led to Swapnadip falling from the second-floor balcony, resulting in his untimely death.

The investigation revealed that Swapnadip was confined with several others, including Sourav Chowdhury, a former mathematics postgraduate student. Sourav’s statements were contradictory and inconsistent, raising suspicion. The police are investigating whether Sourav confiscated Swapnadip’s mobile phone, which could have prevented him from seeking help.
In court, the police opposed Sourav’s bail, fearing he might intimidate witnesses and tamper with evidence. They emphasized the need for his custody to reconstruct the events and identify other individuals involved. The Alipore court granted police custody of Sourav until August 22.
