Bombay High Court: Father Cannot Deny Maintenance Based on Daughter’s Glamorous Social Media Photos
The Bombay High Court has ruled that a father cannot deny financial maintenance to his adult daughter just because she posts glamorous pictures on social media. The Court clarified that such pictures do not prove someone is earning enough to support themselves.
The Background
In this case, a family court had ordered the father to pay ₹25,000 per month as interim maintenance for his daughter. The order was issued after the mother filed a request for financial support on behalf of her daughter.
However, the father challenged the order, claiming that his daughter was earning a high income of ₹72 to ₹80 lakh per month by working as a model, which he said was clear from her social media posts.
Court’s View
Justice Bharti Dangre, who heard the case, said that social media posts alone are not reliable evidence of a person’s income. The Court noted that many young people post glossy, attractive photos online, but that doesn’t mean they are financially independent or earning a lot of money.
The judge added that without solid proof of income, the Court cannot deny a daughter’s right to receive maintenance.
Final Verdict
The Bombay High Court agreed with the family court and rejected the father’s claim. Since there was no actual proof of the daughter’s income, the father must continue paying maintenance.
