Chennai Court Awards ₹15 Lakh Compensation to Student Falsely Accused of Rape

Student Falsely Accused of Rape Gets ₹15 Lakh Compensation from Girl and Her Parents

A Chennai court has awarded ₹15 lakh compensation to a man who was falsely accused of rape during his college days. The court found that the charges were false and that the case had deeply affected his life and career.

The man, Santhosh, was a BTech student when he was arrested and spent 95 days in jail. He was later released on bail, but the rape case dragged on for over seven years. A DNA test confirmed that he was not the father of the child the woman gave birth to.

How the Case Started

Santhosh and the woman lived in the same neighborhood in Chennai. After Santhosh’s family moved to another area, the woman’s mother approached his parents, claiming that he had made their daughter pregnant. She demanded that the two should marry.

When Santhosh denied any relationship, the woman and her parents filed a false rape complaint. Santhosh was arrested and later released on bail on February 12, 2010. During this time, the woman gave birth to a baby girl.

The DNA test later showed that Santhosh was not the biological father. On February 10, 2016, a Mahila Court in Chennai acquitted him of all charges.

Life After the False Accusation

Santhosh said the false case ruined his career and life. He spent ₹2 lakh on legal expenses, couldn’t apply for a commercial driving license, and was forced to work as a low-paid office assistant.

He filed a case asking for ₹30 lakh in damages. The court partly accepted his claim and awarded ₹15 lakh as compensation. The court also ordered that the woman and her parents must pay the compensation.

Justice Delivered

Santhosh’s lawyer, A. Sirajudeen, welcomed the verdict, calling it a step toward justice for people wrongly accused in sensitive cases. The judgment serves as a strong reminder of the consequences of false allegations.
