Court Acquits Man Falsely Accused of Sexual Assault, Orders ₹1 Lakh Compensation
A Delhi court recently cleared a man of charges related to the sexual assault of two minor girls. The court cited strong evidence showing that the accusations were motivated by caste prejudice and disputes between neighbors. The court directed the state to compensate the accused ₹1 lakh for wrongful imprisonment.
False Accusation Due to Neighborhood Dispute
The accused, who belongs to the Dalit community, explained in court that his neighbors held a grudge against him over frequent arguments involving their dogs defecating near his house. The parents allegedly pressured their daughters to make false allegations, framing him as an offender.
District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma acknowledged the possibility of caste hatred influencing the accusations. He noted, “False accusations are often made for various reasons, including caste prejudice, as seen in this case.”
Investigation Lapses Highlighted
The judge criticized the police investigation, highlighting the absence of a female officer during the victims’ statements and the lack of fairness in the inquiry. “The investigation was not conducted with due diligence,” the court observed.
Compensation for Wrongful Imprisonment
The court ordered the state to pay ₹1 lakh compensation to the accused within two months, calling it a symbolic gesture for the injustice faced by him.
Societal Reflection
The judge remarked on the moral decline in society, stating that false accusations reflect ongoing struggles between right and wrong.
This verdict underscores the importance of ensuring fairness and integrity in the judicial process, especially in sensitive cases involving minors.
