Swastika Mukherjee Admits to Filing False Dowry Case Against Ex-Husband
Most people don’t know what really happens when a woman files a false case against a man. In the case of Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee, the answer is — nothing happened to her legally, even after she admitted it.
In September last year, Swastika Mukherjee confessed during a media conference that she had falsely accused her ex-husband, Promit Sen, of dowry harassment. This confession ended a court case that had continued for 10 long years.
Swastika, who married Promit in 1998 when she was just 18, explained that she was young and lacked understanding. She said she followed the advice of her family and friends at the time. That led to false accusations of cruelty and breach of trust.
Promit’s elder brother, Pritam Sen, said their family suffered terribly over the past decade. He shared, “We went through hell — so many arrest warrants, legal costs, and public humiliation. But the worst part is that my brother will never get those 10 years of his life back. He is emotionally broken.”
Swastika said her confession was not made under any pressure, but came from a personal realisation. She expressed regret, saying, “I’m truly sorry for all that Promit and his family have suffered. I hope he finds peace and moves on.”
She also mentioned the custody of their daughter Anwesha, adding that the child’s opinion should be considered too.
In response, Promit’s family welcomed her confession but emphasized the need for a sincere apology. Pritam said, “Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt, but we expect nothing less than a genuine apology.”
This incident highlights a harsh truth — when a woman files a false case against a man, often, there are no legal consequences. The emotional, financial, and mental toll on the man and his family, however, is immense.
