What Happens When a Woman Files a False Case Against a Man?
Did you know that Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee once falsely accused her ex-husband, singer Promit Sen, of dowry harassment? This case, which lasted for 10 years, finally ended last September when Swastika publicly confessed that the allegations were false.
In a media conference, Swastika admitted, “I was young and didn’t have enough understanding back then. I acted based on advice from my family and friends.” The accusations of “cruelty” and “criminal breach of trust” against Promit Sen, along with his family, were ultimately baseless.
Promit’s elder brother, Pritam Sen, shared the toll the case took on their lives. “For the past 10 years, we’ve gone through unimaginable stress—arrest warrants, legal expenses, and public defamation. My brother lost a decade of his life and is mentally devastated,” Pritam revealed.
Swastika married Promit in 1998 when she was only 18. However, two years later, the relationship soured, leading to accusations against not just Promit but also his family members, including Pritam.
In her confession, Swastika said her decision to come clean was driven by a “realization” and not external pressure. She added, “I deeply regret what Promit and his family had to endure. I hope he can move on. As for the custody of our daughter Anwesha, we’ll see what happens. She’s 10 now and should have a say.”
While Promit and his family welcomed Swastika’s apology, Pritam emphasized the need for sincerity. “We’re glad she confessed, but we will only accept a genuine apology,” he stated.
This case highlights an unsettling reality: filing false cases often comes with no significant consequences for the accuser. Despite the mental, financial, and emotional toll it took on Promit and his family, there seems to be no accountability for Swastika’s actions beyond her apology.
False accusations not only harm the accused but also undermine the credibility of genuine cases. It is crucial to ensure justice for both victims and those falsely accused to maintain fairness in the legal system.
