In recent years, India has witnessed a disturbing rise in false cases filed against men, leading to wrongful imprisonment, severe mental distress, and even suicides. The justice system, designed to protect victims, is now being questioned as more men fall victim to false accusations of rape, domestic violence, and dowry harassment. Despite these rising numbers, the conviction rates continue to decline, raising concerns about the gender bias in the legal system.
Case of Vishnu Tiwari: 20 Years of Injustice
One of the most heart-wrenching cases is that of Vishnu Tiwari from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. In 2001, Vishnu was falsely accused of rape and charged under the SC/ST Act. He was convicted in 2003 and spent 20 years behind bars until the Allahabad High Court acquitted him, ruling that the charges were baseless. During his time in prison, Vishnu lost his entire family, including his parents and brothers, and was unable to attend their funerals. Now, at 43, Vishnu faces an uncertain future with no education, skills, or family to rely on.
Colonel Nitish Khanna: A Tragic End
Another tragic case is that of Colonel Nitish Khanna from Madhya Pradesh. In January 2023, Col. Khanna took his own life, unable to bear the mental and physical abuse he faced during his divorce proceedings. His suicide note, marked only with the word “SORRY,” highlights the deep anguish he experienced after filing for divorce on the grounds of cruelty in October 2022. Despite the evidence he provided, Col. Khanna found no relief, leading to his tragic decision.
Ratnesh Valmiki and Yadunandan Aacharya: False Allegations and Harassment
In Uttar Pradesh, lawyer Ratnesh Valmiki ended his life in March 2022, leaving behind a note blaming his wife and mother-in-law for his suicide. In another case, Bangalore resident Yadunandan Aacharya was falsely accused of domestic violence by his wife. Despite having evidence of his innocence, the police refused to file his complaint. The stress from these accusations led to his father’s stroke and brain hemorrhage, while Yadunandan himself faced harassment and violence.
The Case of Aman Baisla: Extortion and False Rape Charges
In Delhi, 22-year-old Aman Baisla committed suicide in October 2020 after being threatened with false rape allegations. Aman’s tragic decision was driven by the extortion demands of a woman who had taken ₹12.5 lakhs from him and threatened to ruin his reputation with false charges. Despite the public outrage, the media largely ignored his story.
False Rape Cases and Honey Traps
Incidents like that of Ayushi Bhatiya from Gurugram further highlight the issue. Ayushi was arrested for filing nine false rape cases as part of an extortion scheme targeting wealthy men. Over the last seven years, police reports have indicated that around 80% of cases filed by women, including rape, domestic violence, and dowry harassment, turn out to be false. Many cases don’t even make it to the courts.
Time for Change
The growing number of false cases against men highlights the need for gender-neutral laws and a more balanced justice system. It’s not just about protecting the rights of women but ensuring basic human rights for everyone, including men, who deserve a fair and speedy trial. As false accusations continue to ruin lives, it’s time for the Indian government to take action and address this critical issue.
