False Cases Against Men in India Are Rising While Conviction Rates Fall — Time to Act
For years, we’ve heard that the world is male-dominated and that men enjoy many privileges that women don’t. But is that really the full picture?
In India, many innocent men are suffering under false legal cases, especially those related to rape, domestic violence, dowry, and cruelty. These cases are often emotionally and financially draining. Unfortunately, Indian law lacks any specific protection for men, and many accused men end up fighting legal battles for years — often with no justice in sight.
Case 1: Vishnu Tiwari – 20 Years in Jail for a False Rape Case
Vishnu Tiwari, a resident of Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, was jailed in 2001 on charges of rape and under the SC/ST Act. He was convicted in 2003. In 2021, the Allahabad High Court acquitted him, saying the charges were false. By then, Vishnu had lost his entire family — his parents and brothers — and couldn’t even attend their funerals. He was only 23 when arrested and is now 43, without a job, education, or support.
“How do I start life again at 43?” he asks.
Case 2: Col. Nitish Khanna – Suicide After Mental Torture
In January 2023, Col. Nitish Khanna, an Army officer from Madhya Pradesh, was found dead by suicide. He had filed for divorce in October 2022, citing cruelty and mental harassment. Despite having evidence, he left behind only a note with “SORRY” written all over — a tragic end for someone who sought justice.
Case 3: Ratnesh Valmiki – Lawyer Ends Life in Lucknow
In March 2022, Ratnesh Valmiki, a 30-year-old lawyer from Lucknow, also died by suicide. In his four-page letter, he blamed his wife and mother-in-law for constant abuse and mental pressure that drove him to take the extreme step.
Case 4: Yadunandan Aacharya – Harassed Over False DV Case
In Bengaluru, Yadunandan Aacharya was falsely accused of domestic violence just a year after marriage. Despite having proof of his innocence, the police refused to file his complaint against his wife. His elderly parents were also harassed, and his father suffered a brain hemorrhage due to the stress. Yadunandan himself was physically attacked by his wife, yet no action was taken against her.
“I was pushed out of the police station like a beggar,” he said.
Case 5: Aman Baisla – A Young Life Lost to Blackmail
In October 2020, Aman Baisla, a 22-year-old from Delhi, died by suicide after being blackmailed with false rape accusations. He had lent ₹12.5 lakhs to a woman who later threatened him with false charges if he asked for his money back. Aman shared his story in a live video on Facebook and Instagram, but mainstream media ignored his case.
Case 6: Ayushi Bhatiya – Arrested for 9 False Rape Cases
In Gurugram, 22-year-old Ayushi Bhatiya was arrested for filing nine fake rape cases to extort money from wealthy men. She is just one of many women who have misused legal protections to trap men in false cases.
The Bigger Picture: Shocking Data
According to police reports over the last seven years, about 80% of cases filed under rape, domestic violence, dowry, and 498A have turned out to be false or exaggerated. Many don’t even make it to trial. These numbers show a serious misuse of laws meant to protect genuine victims.
Need for Gender-Neutral Laws
This is not about taking away women’s rights — it’s about giving equal human rights to all, including men. Justice must be fair, fast, and not biased toward any gender. Without that, the very meaning of justice is lost.
It’s time the Indian government recognizes the rising issue of false cases against men and takes real steps to introduce gender-neutral laws and speedy trial mechanisms.
If not now, when?
