Many people may not know that popular Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee once falsely accused her ex-husband of dowry harassment. In September last year, Swastika admitted at a media conference that the dowry harassment claims she made against her estranged husband, Promit Sen, were untrue. This confession marked the end of a legal battle that lasted for 10 years.
Swastika explained her actions by saying, “I was young and didn’t have enough sense back then. I just did what my family, friends, and peers advised me to do.” She had falsely accused her husband, singer Promit Sen, of “subjecting her to cruelty” and “criminal breach of trust.”
Promit’s elder brother, Pritam Sen, said, “Things started to go wrong about two years later when, out of nowhere, my brother, our family, and even I, who all lived in different places, were charged by her for dowry-related crimes.” He added, “We went through hell for the past ten years. With all the arrest warrants, expenses, and defamation, my brother will never get back the last ten years. He’s completely mentally devastated.”
Swastika and Promit married in 1998 when Swastika was just 18 years old. When asked why she decided to come clean, Swastika said it was due to a “realization” and not because of any pressure. “I am deeply sorry for all that Promit and his family have gone through. I hope he can move on. Regarding our daughter Anwesha’s custody, let’s see how things play out. She is ten years old and should have a say in this,” Swastika stated.
Despite the years of suffering, Pritam said that he and his family were relieved by Swastika’s confession. He remarked, “I think we should give her the benefit of the doubt. Let’s see where this leads. But we’ll accept nothing less than a genuine apology.”
So, what happens to a woman who files a false case against a man? In this case, the answer seems to be nothing.
