In a tragic incident in Baruipur, 40 km from Kolkata, a 50-year-old woman and her 25-year-old son have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and chopping his body into six parts. The incident came to light when parts of the body were discovered floating in a nearby pond.
The victim, 55-year-old Ujjawal Chakraborty, was killed on the evening of November 14 after a quarrel over Rs 3,000 examination fees for his son. According to the police, Ujjawal was an alcoholic and often assaulted his son. On the fateful evening, a heated argument escalated, and in a fit of rage, his son Raju strangled him.
Raju, who was studying polytechnic from ITI and seeking employment, then dismembered his father’s body. Two days later, on November 17, body parts started surfacing in a nearby pond, wrapped in plastic bags.
The discovery began when the head, found in a polythene bag from a local garment shop, helped the police trace the victim’s locality. Suspicion arose when Shyamali and Raju lodged a missing person’s report early on November 15, shortly after disposing of the body parts.
The police identified the victim and, after prolonged interrogation, the mother and son confessed to the crime. They claimed Ujjawal, a security guard, was killed due to ongoing domestic disputes exacerbated by his drinking habits.
So far, four of the six body parts, including the head, waist, and two legs, have been recovered. The police are still searching for the two hands, believed to be disposed of in the nearby pond and bushes. Raju made six trips on his bicycle to dump the body parts within a 500-meter radius in the Khas Mallick and Dehimedan Malla areas.
Following the confession, Shyamali and Raju were produced in court and are now in 12-day police custody.
