A tragic incident unfolded in January 2022 in Kalady, Kerala, when a youth and his father died by suicide following a domestic violence complaint filed by the youth’s wife. The deceased were identified as Anto (32) and his father Antony (70).
Anto, who had recently returned from working abroad, set himself on fire near the Sivajipuram-Thuravoor road. Despite being rushed to a private hospital in Angamaly, he succumbed to his injuries by 4 PM. Upon hearing of his son’s death, Antony went to his daughter-in-law Niya’s house in Kunnukara and set himself ablaze, dying on the spot.
The family dispute began after Niya left her marital home following an argument with Anto and had not returned for nine months. Niya later filed a complaint with the Chengamanadu police, accusing Anto and his mother, Elsy, of mental harassment and failure to care for their children. Based on her complaint, a case was registered against Anto and Elsy.
Police suspect that Anto was under severe mental distress due to the legal case and allegations against him, leading to his tragic decision.
This heartbreaking sequence of events highlights the devastating impact unresolved family conflicts and legal disputes can have on individuals and families.
