A 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at a hospital on August 9, igniting national outrage. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case. This tragic incident has led to widespread protests by doctors across the country, demanding justice for the victim and the implementation of a law that ensures the safety of all resident doctors in medical institutions.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come under fire for the TMC government’s handling of the situation. Additionally, the Supreme Court has ordered the removal of the trainee doctor’s name, photos, and videos from media platforms, expressing deep concern over the “horrific” crime. The court has also set up a 9-member task force to develop strategies to ensure the safety of doctors in their workplaces. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been directed to submit a status report by August 22.
