In a shocking crime from Delhi, a 48-year-old woman named Sharmistha Som was arrested for killing her 86-year-old mother-in-law, Hashi Som, on April 28. The attack, carried out with a frying pan and a pressure cooker, left the elderly woman with 14 injuries, including severe head trauma.
Reports suggest that Sharmistha was frustrated with the responsibility of caring for her bedridden mother-in-law. Her strained relationship with her husband, Surjeet Som, had worsened over this issue. In an attempt to cover up the murder, Sharmistha initially claimed her mother-in-law had fallen and suffered injuries. However, a post-mortem examination and CCTV footage from a camera installed in the victim’s room revealed the truth.
The victim had been brought to Delhi from Kolkata by her son in March last year due to her mobility issues. Initially staying with the family at Swastik Residency, Neb Sarai, she was later shifted to a rented flat opposite their house in October 2023 after Sharmistha’s complaints. A CCTV camera was set up to monitor her condition.
On the day of the incident, Sharmistha was captured on camera entering the flat with the fatal kitchen items. The footage recorded the sounds of screams and blows, followed by Sharmistha cleaning the weapons used in the attack. Her husband discovered the body later that day after returning from work.
The post-mortem report confirmed that the victim died from haemorrhagic shock caused by blunt force injuries to her head, limbs, and body. Police have ruled out the involvement of the son, Surjeet. Sharmistha has been arrested, and an FIR for murder has been registered.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about elder abuse and the pressures of caregiving within families. The investigation is ongoing.
