In a shocking incident from Delhi, a 31-year-old woman disguised in a burqa allegedly stole gold jewellery worth ₹15 lakh and cash from her mother’s home, driven by jealousy towards her younger sister.
On January 30, Kamlesh, 65, a resident of Sewak Park in Uttam Nagar, reported to the police that gold coins, necklaces, earrings, and ₹25,000 in cash had been stolen from her residence.
CCTV footage showed a burqa-clad woman carrying a yellow bag entering the house between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm. Further investigation revealed that the woman was Kamlesh’s elder daughter, Shweta.
Police said Shweta resented her younger sister, Monica, believing their mother favoured her. Monica’s wedding was just days away, and the stolen jewellery had been set aside for it. Shweta was also struggling with debts, including ₹90,000 borrowed from her mother, who had been asking her to repay in small instalments.
On the day of the theft, Shweta allegedly left home on the pretext of buying vegetables, took the keys, and went to Uttam Nagar West Metro Station, where she changed into a burqa. She then went to her mother’s house, carried out the burglary, and later sold the stolen jewellery at a nearby shop.
Police added that the loot also included Shweta’s own jewellery, which she had given to her mother during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. She had taken loans amounting to ₹1.5 lakh from various people.
Shweta, a housewife and mother of a four-year-old, was arrested from her Mohan Garden home. Her husband, an employee at a private firm in Noida, was reportedly unaware of her actions.
Kamlesh, a pensioner whose husband passed away in 1997, lives with Monica, who works for an AI company in Delhi.
An FIR under IPC Section 380 (theft in a dwelling house) has been registered.
