86-Year-Old Woman Killed by Daughter-in-Law in Shocking Delhi Incident

In a shocking and tragic incident in Delhi, a 48-year-old woman has been arrested for the brutal murder of her 86-year-old bedridden mother-in-law on April 28. The crime took place in southwest Delhi, where the accused allegedly used a frying pan and a pressure cooker to repeatedly strike the elderly woman, resulting in her death. The victim, Hashi Som, suffered 14 injuries, with over a dozen blows to her head and face.

The accused, Sarmistha Som, was reportedly overwhelmed with the responsibility of caring for her mother-in-law, which had caused tension in her marriage. Frustrated, Sarmistha decided to end her mother-in-law’s life and attempted to stage the scene as an accidental fall. However, the post-mortem report and footage from a camera installed in the home exposed the truth.

Sarmistha lived with her husband, Surjeet Som, 51, and their 16-year-old daughter at Swastik Residency in Neb Sarai. Hashi Som, originally from Kolkata, had been brought to Delhi by her son, Surjeet, in March last year because she needed care due to her inability to walk. Initially, she lived with the family, but after Sarmistha’s constant objections, Surjeet arranged for his mother to stay in a rented flat across from their home in October.

Surjeet had installed a CCTV camera on a bedside table in his mother’s flat, monitoring the feed on his mobile phone. On the day of the murder, he was busy with work and didn’t check the footage. He discovered his mother’s lifeless body only after returning home.

Their 16-year-old daughter informed the police about the strained relationship between her mother and grandmother. The police recovered the CCTV camera, but its video storage was missing. Surjeet then provided the memory card, which revealed disturbing footage from the day of the murder. The video showed Sarmistha entering her mother-in-law’s flat at 10:30 AM with a pressure cooker and frying pan. Screams and sounds of blows could be heard, followed by Sarmistha cleaning the utensils with a cloth.

According to a police officer, “The autopsy report showed 14 injuries on the victim’s head. The cause of death was haemorrhagic shock due to ante-mortem injuries caused by blunt force trauma to the head, right hand, left upper limb, and left lower limb.”

Sarmistha was subsequently arrested, and an FIR for murder was registered. The police have ruled out any involvement of her husband, Surjeet.
