Delhi Court Orders Woman to Pay ₹15 Lakh to Ex-Husband for Defaming Him
A Delhi court has ordered a woman to pay ₹15 lakh to her ex-husband for defaming him through abusive emails and false legal cases. Judge Sunil Beniwal of the Saket District Court ruled that her actions harmed the man’s personal and professional life.
The man had filed a defamation suit claiming that his ex-wife damaged his reputation by making false allegations and filing baseless cases against him. The couple got married in 2001, but the wife left their home in 2009 with their young daughter.
According to the man, his ex-wife sent abusive messages and false complaints to authorities and used harsh language in emails and chats with friends. He also said that she kept him away from his daughter and made it difficult for him to work, eventually leading to major surgery due to stress, which cost ₹6 lakh.
The court found that the woman had indeed used defamatory language and sent damaging emails. These emails were supported by digital evidence and were not denied or challenged by her.
In 2021, the family court had already granted the man a divorce on the grounds of cruelty under the Hindu Marriage Act. Despite the divorce, the woman continued sending harmful emails—even to the man’s elderly uncle, who was also his employer.
The woman argued that the case was fake and filed only to harass her. She also claimed that the case was too old since some of the chats dated back to 2010. However, the court ruled that the case was filed within the legal time limit and pointed out that she had made contradictory statements about her email accounts.
In conclusion, the court found the woman guilty of defamation and ordered her to pay ₹15 lakh to her ex-husband, along with 9% interest from the day the case was filed until payment is made.
