Mumbai Police: Molestation and POSCO Cases Need DCP Approval

Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey has introduced new guidelines for registering molestation and POSCO Act cases. From now on, these cases will only be registered upon the recommendation of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and with the approval of the zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

The Commissioner issued this directive to address the issue of false cases being filed due to personal grudges, financial disputes, and other reasons. The directive highlights that in many instances, the accused is arrested without proper verification of facts, only to be later found innocent.

“The reputation of the accused is damaged unnecessarily, even though they are eventually discharged. To avoid this, police officers are instructed to register FIRs for molestation or any crime under the POSCO Act only after the divisional ACP recommends it and the zonal DCP approves it,” the Commissioner stated in the order.

Additionally, the directive specifies that DCPs should follow the judgment of the 2013 case, “Lalita Kumari Vs Government of UP and others,” while granting permission for FIRs in such cases.
