In a recent ruling, a Pune court ordered a daughter-in-law to vacate her in-laws’ home after she was found guilty of harassing them both physically and financially. The case was initiated under the Domestic Violence Act in 2022, where the daughter-in-law had filed a suit against her husband and in-laws.
Initially, in August 2022, the court allowed the daughter-in-law to live in a room in the bungalow owned by her parents-in-law, as her husband was working abroad in the United States. The bungalow housed only the in-laws at the time.
However, despite the court’s warning not to disturb her elderly in-laws, the daughter-in-law continued to harass them. She allegedly vandalized household items and caused them financial stress. Frustrated with the ongoing situation, the in-laws filed an application in court to revoke the previous order allowing her to live in the house.
During the proceedings, the court heard both sides. The husband, who was living in the US, agreed to rent a separate house for his wife. The court ruled that he must pay ₹25,000 per month for her rent.
The First-Class Magistrate CK Shelke noted that senior citizens have the right to live peacefully and should not endure such mistreatment. After reviewing the evidence, the court ordered the daughter-in-law to vacate the house within 15 days.
The daughter-in-law, a doctor by profession, is currently not practicing.
This judgment underscores the court’s commitment to protecting senior citizens from harassment and ensuring that they can live without undue stress or disturbances.
