Chennai Journalist Denied Rental Due to Bias Against Single Women

In a surprising incident from Chennai, journalist Bharathy Singaravel from The News Minute was denied a rental house because a fellow tenant, a bachelor, objected to living next to a single woman. Bharathy took to Twitter to share her ordeal while searching for a house in the city.

Describing her experience, Bharathy wrote:

“So, I almost finalized a place today. Met the landlord, everything was fine. It was an independent house. But then, a bachelor living on the same floor argued with the landlord, saying, ‘How can you rent to a single woman next to me? Rent it to a family instead.’”

She added that the tenant was an advocate, which made the landlord backtrack and refuse to rent the house to her, fearing trouble. Bharathy expressed her frustration over the societal obsession with renting only to families and how single women are often treated as the lowest priority renters.

“It’s fine for a bachelor to rent a place for himself, but a single woman doing the same is apparently unthinkable. The landlord’s fear of the advocate and the tenant’s audacity to strong-arm him is exhausting,” she wrote.

Bharathy also sought leads for rental options, specifying her budget of ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 and requesting no family-only restrictions.

Her post, shared on May 22, 2020, resonated with thousands of users, sparking widespread discussions about housing biases faced by single women in Indian cities.

This incident highlights the ongoing struggle of single women to find housing, challenging societal norms and the discriminatory attitudes prevalent in the rental market.
