Bombay High Court: Fathers Cannot Refuse Maintenance Based on Daughter’s Glamorous Social Media Posts

The Bombay High Court has ruled that fathers cannot deny maintenance to their daughters solely based on glamorous pictures they post on social media. This ruling came as the court directed a father to provide financial support to his adult daughter.

In this case, the family court initially granted the wife’s request for interim maintenance, ordering the husband to pay Rs 25,000 per month to support their daughter. However, the father challenged this decision, arguing that his daughter earned a significant income, as suggested by her social media profile.

The father claimed that his daughter was a model, earning between Rs 72-80 lakh per month, and pointed to her social media presence as proof of her financial independence.

Justice Bharti Dangre, presiding over the case, disagreed with the father’s argument. The court supported the Family Court’s view that images on social media are not reliable indicators of a person’s financial status or independence. Justice Dangre noted that while many young people today share glossy and glamorous photos online, these images do not necessarily reflect their real-life circumstances or financial stability.

The court concluded that, without concrete evidence proving the daughter’s substantial income, the father could not deny maintenance based solely on her social media activity. As a result, the court rejected the father’s appeal and upheld the original order for maintenance.
