The Delhi High Court has refused to grant bail to a woman’s mother and grandmother, who were accused of abducting and attacking her husband, Raman, and attempting to mutilate his private parts. The incident occurred after Raman and Menka, his wife, married without her family’s consent.
The couple had returned to Delhi after their marriage on December 22, 2021, when Menka’s family members threatened to kill Raman. They went to Rajouri Garden Police Station to file for protection, but on their way back, they were attacked by Menka’s brothers and uncles, who took them to their home in Sagarpur.
According to the police report, Menka’s 86-year-old grandmother, Kaushalya, allegedly instigated the family to show no mercy to Raman and urged them to amputate his private parts to solve the issue. Kaushalya has 42 criminal cases registered against her. Menka’s mother, Geeta, was also accused of assaulting Raman and had previously been declared a proclaimed offender.
A third individual involved in the case, Menka’s sister, Naina Rana, was also charged but was granted bail by the court due to the lack of active involvement in the attack.
Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta, while denying bail to Geeta and Kaushalya, emphasized the severity of their participation in the assault. The judge noted that the police should act swiftly and sensitively in protecting couples who marry legally, highlighting the importance of timely intervention in such cases.
The court also criticized the police’s handling of the couple’s complaint, stating that the officers at Rajouri Garden Police Station failed to ensure the safety of the victims. Justice Mendiratta labeled the conduct of the police as “deplorable” and instructed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter and take corrective action within four weeks.
The court’s decision reinforces the need for police authorities to be more proactive in protecting couples whose marriages may be opposed by family members and stresses the importance of sensitivity in dealing with such cases.
Both Geeta and Kaushalya were denied bail, given their past criminal records and involvement in the assault.
