The Indian government has initiated the process of amending key criminal laws, including the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. The amendments aim to modernize the legal system, ensure affordable and speedy justice, and create a people-focused legal structure, as informed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Stakeholder Consultations
Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Kumar Mishra, stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought input from various stakeholders. These include:
- Governors and Chief Ministers of states
- Lieutenant Governors and Union Territory Administrators
- Chief Justice of India and High Court Chief Justices
- Bar Council of India and state bar councils
- Universities and law institutes
- Members of Parliament (MPs)
Recommendations from Parliamentary Committee
Mr. Mishra highlighted that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, in its 146th report, emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of India’s criminal justice system.
Committee for Criminal Law Reforms
To guide this initiative, a committee was formed under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Delhi. The committee will provide recommendations for reforming criminal laws.
Mr. Mishra assured that the government is committed to drafting a comprehensive legislative framework that incorporates the committee’s recommendations and the suggestions received from stakeholders.
By revising outdated legal frameworks, this initiative aims to strengthen the justice delivery system, ensuring it is fair, efficient, and accessible to all citizens.
