Government Begins Process to Amend IPC and CrPC for Comprehensive Legal Reforms
The government has started the process to amend key criminal laws, including the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. This move aims to introduce comprehensive legal reforms in consultation with all stakeholders, as informed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Kumar Mishra, announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought suggestions from various stakeholders. These include Governors, Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors, Administrators of Union Territories, the Chief Justice of India, Chief Justices of various High Courts, the Bar Council of India, State Bar Councils, universities, law institutes, and all Members of Parliament.
Mishra highlighted that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, in its 146th report, recommended a thorough review of the country’s criminal justice system. The aim is to provide affordable and speedy justice and to create a legal structure centered around the people.
“The government has initiated the process for comprehensive amendments to criminal laws such as the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, in consultation with all stakeholders,” Mishra stated.
To suggest these reforms, a committee has been formed under the chairpersonship of the Vice Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi. The government is dedicated to drafting comprehensive legislation that incorporates the committee’s recommendations and the suggestions from all stakeholders.
“The government is committed to bringing out a comprehensive legislation, taking into account the recommendations of the committee and the suggestions received from all the stakeholders,” Mishra added.
