A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday for allegedly throwing acid on her ex-boyfriend during his wedding in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district. The incident took place on April 19, 2023, when the groom, Damrudhar Baghel, aged 25, was marrying a 19-year-old woman in Chhote Amabal village. As a result of the acid attack, the groom, bride, and ten guests suffered minor burns.
Police filed a case under Section 326 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to causing serious injury with acid. Initially, the attacker was unidentified, prompting a thorough investigation.
“We reviewed CCTV footage from the village, contacted informants, and looked into the backgrounds of both the bride and groom,” a police officer stated. “Witnesses could not see the attacker because the incident occurred late in the evening when the power supply was interrupted.”
The investigation ultimately revealed that the assailant was the groom’s ex-girlfriend. She was arrested shortly after. It was discovered that she disguised herself as a man to hide her identity during the attack.
The accused explained to the police that she had been in a relationship with Damrudhar for several years and felt betrayed by his marriage to another woman. “Upon learning about Damrudhar’s wedding, she planned the attack and stole acid from a chili farm where she worked,” the police officer noted. The acid is typically used for cleaning the farm’s drip irrigation system.
