Calcutta High Court Encourages Separated Couple to Reconnect at Eco Park
In a unique attempt to resolve a marital dispute, the Calcutta High Court asked a couple, separated for the last eight years, to spend 48 hours together at Eco Park in Kolkata to reconsider their relationship.
The couple had married eight years ago. The husband is a state government engineer, and the wife works as an IT professional in Sector V. However, they only lived together for three months after their wedding. Since then, the wife stayed with her parents, but neither party filed for a formal divorce for over seven and a half years.
About six months ago, the wife filed a complaint under the Domestic Violence Act, 2005, claiming that some of her jewellery was being withheld by her husband. In response, the husband approached the High Court for anticipatory bail, fearing arrest.
Justice Kausik Chanda, who heard the case, decided to personally speak with both parties in his chamber. When asked if they were willing to reconcile, both the husband and wife agreed to explore the possibility.
Justice Chanda then instructed the couple to spend two days together to see if they could rebuild their relationship. His office helped arrange a stay for them, suggesting Eco Park as the location.
After spending time together, the couple agreed to resolve their issues, giving hope for a possible reunion.
