CJI Advises Educated Woman to Choose Mutual Divorce and Find a Job Instead of Long Legal Battle

CJI to Woman in Divorce Case: Choose Mutual Consent, Find a Job

During a hearing in a matrimonial dispute, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud gave important advice to a woman involved in a transfer petition. He encouraged both parties to consider divorce by mutual consent, stating that a long legal battle would only help the lawyers, not the couple.

The Chief Justice asked the woman about her education. She told the court that she holds an MTech and a PhD from a U.S. university. When asked about her job, she said she was currently unemployed.

CJI Chandrachud responded, “You are so educated and yet you don’t have a job. You must find a job for yourself.”

He further advised the couple to avoid years of courtroom conflict and instead agree to a peaceful separation through mutual consent. “You can keep fighting for 10 years and only the lawyers will benefit,” he said. “Why don’t you be reasonable and agree to a mutual divorce? Otherwise, there will be criminal complaints and more trouble.”

The Chief Justice also mentioned that their relationship had clearly broken down. He added that since the woman was highly educated, she was in a better position to rebuild her life. “If you were uneducated, it would have been different. But you are qualified and can find work,” he said.

The message from the court was clear: Avoid long legal fights, make sensible decisions, and focus on building a better future, especially when you have the education and ability to do so.
