Health Concerns Rise Among Indian Tech Workers Due to Long Hours

A recent report by Onsurity and the Knowledge Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) reveals that about 43% of Indian tech workers experience health issues related to their jobs, with long work hours being a major factor.

Over half of tech professionals in India are working an average of 52.5 hours per week, much higher than the national average of 47.7 hours. Of these workers, 55% report that late hours negatively impact their health, leading to problems like acidity, gut issues, back and neck pain, sleep disturbances, muscle stiffness, eyesight problems, weight gain, and severe headaches. Additionally, around 45% of tech professionals are struggling with mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

“As our economy grows, our reliance on tech talent will only increase. It’s vital for companies to create supportive environments for their tech workers. Ignoring their daily struggles can make tech jobs less appealing and limit their true potential. This report is a wake-up call for tech companies to prioritize the health and well-being of their teams,” said Yogesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of Onsurity, an employee healthcare benefits platform.

Nearly 25% of tech workers report worsening sleep patterns, with over 51% averaging only 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep per night. Additionally, 74% are missing family events and celebrations due to work demands. These findings highlight the serious health and well-being challenges faced by tech professionals in India.

The study, titled “Burying the Burnout: Decoding the Health Challenges of India’s Tech Geniuses,” surveyed over 300 tech professionals. Bharat Patel, Secretary General of KCCI, emphasized the importance of prioritizing employee welfare. “Working in the IT/ITES sector is highly demanding. Tight deadlines and setbacks often take a toll on employees’ health. It is crucial for companies to focus on preventive measures and create a supportive work environment where employees feel comfortable, stress-free, and satisfied. Prioritizing employee welfare isn’t just a preference; it’s a necessity,” he said.
