Chhattisgarh High Court Rules Wife’s Abuse at Husband’s Office as Cruelty, Grants Divorce

The Chhattisgarh High Court recently ruled that a wife’s abusive behavior at her husband’s office and her false accusations of an extramarital affair amount to cruelty, thus upholding a lower court’s decision to grant divorce to the man. This ruling came after an appeal was filed by the wife, challenging the Raipur family court’s divorce order.

The case involves a man from Dhamtari district, who married a woman from Raipur in 2010. Over the years, the man sought divorce, citing several grounds, one of them being that his wife would regularly abuse him and prevent him from meeting his family. He also alleged that the wife had visited his office and created disturbances by using offensive language.

The family court in Raipur granted the divorce in December 2019, after reviewing the evidence. The woman, however, appealed the decision in the High Court, claiming that she had been treated cruelly by her husband. She argued that the lower court had not considered her side adequately and that the husband had fabricated evidence to obtain the divorce.

During the High Court hearing, the husband’s lawyer argued that the wife’s actions—visiting his office and publicly abusing him—had harmed his reputation and dignity. He also pointed out that the wife had falsely accused him of having an illicit relationship with a female colleague, which damaged his character. The High Court agreed that these actions amounted to cruelty under the law.

The court noted that the wife’s behavior, which included making false allegations and publicly humiliating her husband, would naturally harm his reputation and status at work. The High Court also emphasized that the wife’s actions went beyond verbal abuse, extending to interference in the husband’s relationship with his family and his ability to maintain a positive work environment.

Based on this assessment, the Chhattisgarh High Court upheld the divorce granted by the family court, ruling that the wife’s actions amounted to cruelty. This decision highlights the serious legal consequences of abusive behavior and false accusations in marital relationships.
