20-Year-Old DU Student Abducted and Killed Over Alleged Love Affair in UP

In a tragic incident, a second-year BA student from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, Himanshu Sharma, was abducted and beaten to death in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Himanshu, aged 20, was taken from near his home in northeast Delhi on Saturday by members of a family who accused him of being involved with their 19-year-old daughter.

The girl’s family claimed that Himanshu had raped their daughter and was blackmailing her, which led to the crime. However, Himanshu’s mother, Rajni Sharma, strongly denied these allegations, stating that her son was lured out of the house after receiving a phone call from the girl’s phone. She believes that the girl’s family members were responsible for his abduction and death.

Rajni said, “The accusations are completely false. There was no woman involved. My son received a call and left the house for what he believed was a birthday party. Later, we found out that four to five members of the girl’s family kidnapped and killed him.”

An FIR has been registered against seven people, including the girl’s mother. Baghpat police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case, as confirmed by Baghpat Kotwali circle officer, Harish Bhadauria.

Rajni has been raising Himanshu and his younger sister on her own for the past 12 years after her husband left the family. She runs a small grocery shop and stitches clothes to support her children in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur.

On the day of the incident, Rajni felt a growing sense of unease when Himanshu did not return home by 5 p.m. She tried calling him, but his phone was switched off. Around 10 p.m., she contacted her relatives, worried about her son’s whereabouts. Soon after, a woman from the neighborhood, whose son had also called Himanshu earlier that day, informed Rajni that her son had been kidnapped.

The woman even made a video call to her contacts, showing Himanshu being held captive and threatening to kill him. Rajni explained, “This woman used to visit our house often, so I trusted her. She said if I wanted to see my son again, I should go with her.”

Rajni was taken to a forested area in Baghpat, where she saw a car with a Delhi number plate. Her son was inside, severely injured and covered in blood. As she prepared to take him to the hospital, a police control van arrived, arresting two of the accused.

When asked about the alleged relationship between Himanshu and the girl, the Sharma family denied knowing anything about it. Rajni, grieving her son’s death, said, “Our lives have been destroyed. If they had any issues with him, why didn’t they come to me? Why did they have to kill him?”

The tragic incident highlights the deep impact of unchecked violence and highlights the need for addressing social tensions and grievances before they escalate into deadly confrontations.
