A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday for allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend with acid during his wedding in Chhattisgarh. The incident took place on April 19, 2023, in Chhote Amabal village, Bastar district, as the groom, Damrudhar Baghel (25), was marrying a 19-year-old woman.
The acid attack resulted in minor burns to the groom, bride, and ten other attendees. Police filed a case under Section 326 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by acid.
To investigate the case, police reviewed CCTV footage, used informers, and examined the backgrounds of both the bride and groom. The attack occurred in the evening when the power supply was interrupted, making it difficult to identify the assailant.
Eventually, the investigation led to the arrest of the groom’s ex-girlfriend. She had disguised herself as a man to commit the crime. The woman admitted to the attack, explaining that she had been in a relationship with Damrudhar for several years. She felt betrayed when she learned about his marriage to another woman.
The accused revealed she planned the attack after discovering the wedding and stole the acid from a chili farm where she worked. The acid is typically used for cleaning drip irrigation systems at the farm.
